Sony Xperia X gets Sailfish OS with version Sailfish X 2.1.3.5 Kymijoki


October 11, 2017 Jolla in cooperation with Sony Open Devices program released an optional operating system for Sony Xperia X mobile phone. Other devices by Sony might follow up. Sailfish X, based on Sailfish OS by Jolla, Finland is a gesture based operating system developed on the grounds of Nokia's MeeGo. What are you getting, what might you miss?

Financial news: Jolla reaches 70M USD of funding


Jolla's funding totals up to 70M USD


Surviving against the big players in the mobile industry is a lot about funding, at least until a start-up gets all their sails up. Jolla, a Finnish company developing Sailfish OS mobile operating system, has struggled for six years against the real big players like Google's Android and that hasn't always been easy. One of the former Nokia directors told them in the beginning that they will need at least 100M USD to break into the business they aim at. Reaching the end of 5th financing round, Jolla has now received 70% of that, but they are still far away of their goal.

NOKIA returning to mobile device markets via exclusive licence for IP and brand with HMD Global

Nokia, the "mothership" also behind Sailfish OS team Jolla Oy, have their smartphone brand held by Microsoft for a while more, but today Nokia announced a new IP and licencing agreement. New Finnish based company HMD Global is to make Nokia branded phones and tablets using Nokia patents and having Nokia member on board for ensuring quality, design and Nokia's consumer focused innovation.

Russian company to use Sailfish OS components

Update, May 11, 2016: Jolla officially confirms licensing of Sailfish OS to a Russian company "Open Mobile Platform".

May 6, 2016, Innopolis, Tatarstan, Russia. New company "Открытая мобильная платформа" (Open Mobile Platform) is about to begin the development of domestic Russian operating system for mobile devices. The new mobile operating system is suggested to be based on components of Sailfish OS. The company is already hiring employees. Russia aims to reduce the use of foreign mobile operating systems from the current 95% to 75% by 2020, and to 50% by 2025. Android and iOS down?

Intex Aqua Fish smartphone specs

Intex releases entry-level smartphone with Sailfish OS in India 

On February 22, 2016, Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain, Intex introduced the 2nd official Sailfish OS smartphone ever to be released later in spring to the markets in India. Intex aims for a budget phone to begin with their own story on this OS.

[News] Jolla agrees debts, financing of $12M, new employees

Application for debt restructuring cancelled. Year 2016 secured with new financing. New employees being interviewed.

In autumn 2015 there were sad news: Employees laid off, debts on hold, file for debt restructuring. Jolla's 3rd death valley, pretty close to actual bankruptcy, was passed on December and now Jolla shares quite positive news.

This is a news analysis on Jolla's Press Release published on May 3, 2016, reflecting the latest news to those shared back in 2015. Sailfish OS seems to be having the sails up quite well right now. Will there be some wind too?

Earlier, we shared a warning to our readers to keep some distance with any possible upcoming financing campaigns for a promised new Sailfish OS Turing Phone to be manufactured in Salo, Finland (image). The local newspapers are positive on TRI's future plans, but some of the national ones have found reasons for skeptic posts too.

Jolla Tablets in China

Jolla tried to deliver more tablets, now sold by others on Taobao  

After Jolla's financial situation was partially resolved in December 2015 they did their best to deliver more slates to the Jolla Tablet campaign participants on Indiegogo. Jolla got 540 more, missed 400 slates already sold to others, and had to promise almost 10 000 backers a refund in two portions. Juhani Lassila from Jolla was very transparent on the China situation when I asked about it.

Announced first time on July 2015 at MWC15 Shanghai, to be introduced on February 2016 at MWC16 Barcelona, Spain, annd to be launched to the markets in India later at spring. Intex Aqua Fish is a new smartphone model by Intex (India) running Sailfish OS mobile operating system by Jolla (Finland).

Lay-offs of 70 employees at Jolla have all been canceled, and Jolla is currently recruiting back their key resources. The aim is to continue with about half of the amount of Sailors compared to the situation before the lay-offs.

News update: Debts on hold at Jolla

As part of Jolla's debt restructuring process, The Court in Finland has set Jolla's debts to temporary hold until the starting of the actual process is decided. In the meanwhile, Jolla is looking forward for financial round for December, and preparing the next system update for their Sailfish OS mobile operating system. Juhani Lassila, Head of Communications at Jolla, seems positive on financing.

The first customers are expected to be found on public sector, followed by privacy concerned businesses and organisations.
